abstract = "The objective of this research was to identify the relationships
between the spatial distribution of soil cation exchange capacity
(CEC) and the land use at the munipalities of Urup{\'a} and
Cujubim, in Rondonia State, focusing in the natural resources
sustentability. For the geostatistical analisys was used the
program GS+ 5.0 to determine the spatial distribution of CEC . The
programs ERDAS 8.7, ArcGIS 9 and SPRING 4.0 were used for
conversion, edition, processing and exhibition of thematic maps
and processing of Landsat ETM+ and CBERS-2 images from 2001 and
2004. Results indicate that the soil fertility and land use change
relation differ bettwen both regions. Soil fertility plays a minor
role in the deforestation decision process. The main factors
associated with deforestation in the study area could be related
to new settlements and economic factors.",
